Wrigley field served as the backdrop for the 1960 television show “Home Run Derby”. Filmed in 1959, the show pitted some of the games great power hitters in one-on-one contests for most home runs.

1961 Angels

The expansion franchise Los Angeles Angels played their first and only season at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles prior to sharing Dodger Stadium starting in 1962. The Angels had a respectable first season winning 70 games and finishing eighth in the American League.

The Angels first game at Wrigley field would be on April 27th, a 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

The Angels were an average offensive team with right fielder Albie Pearson leading the team with a .288 average. Catcher Earl Averill, First Baseman Steve Bilko, Left Fielder Leon Wagner and Center Fielder Ken Hunt all hit 20+ home runs on the year.

Ken McBride led the staff in wins with 12, garnering an All-Star nod. Relief pitchers Art Fowler and Tom Morgan each contributed double-digit saves. Reliever, Ryne Duren was also named an All-Star selection.
